The following information is in reference to a SIMULATED incident taking place in Mesa County. This is only a drill. More information about this drill can be found at here.
In light of the sensitive nature of the cargo in the DOE vehicle involved in the I70 accident, here is more information from the Department of Energy.
“The Office of Secure Transportation (OST) is managed by the National Nuclear Security Administration within the U. S. Department of Energy.
“OST is responsible for the safe and secure transport in the contiguous United States of government-owned special nuclear materials. These classified shipments can contain nuclear weapons or components, enriched uranium, or plutonium. The cargo is transported in highly modified secure tractor-trailers and escorted by armed Federal Agents who provide security and national incident command system response in the event of emergencies.”
